A Zesty Red for Grilled Beef: Four Vines Zinfandel California Old Vine Cuvee 2009
Kim Marcus, WINE SPECTATOR, June 1, 2011

Zinfandel has always been one of my go-to wines for easy summer enjoyment and grilled fare. On a recent visit to my mother in the San Francisco Bay Area, I perused the local wine selection at her neighborhood grocery. I was in a parsimonious mood and on the hunt for something in the $10 range.

I admit I can be a sucker for the “old vine” marketing ploy, but when I saw a Zinfandel labeled as such, and for just $11, I made my move. The wine was from Four Vines, an innovative winery launched by Christian Tietje in 1994. Since then, it has climbed to the top of our Zinfandel reviews with a cast of wines with eclectic names such at “The Maverick,” “The Sophisticate” and “The Biker.” Late last year, the winery was purchased by the Purple Wine Company, though Tietje is staying on as consulting winemaker for three more vintages.

Vintage Values
By Peg Melnik, THE PRESS DEMOCRAT, May 17, 2011

If you want a good economic indicator, look no further than the Wine Country palate. Retailers say people are still shopping for bargain wines in big numbers.
And the good news is there are great values to be found that don't force you to compromise taste. Complexity, yes. But the everyday wine lover can easily survive without a steady diet of high-end perfection.
With that in mind, here are some labels to keep an eye on; they're tasty and they won't break the bank. Most are priced at $12 and under with a couple in the $15 range.

Four Vines, 2009 Naked Santa Barbara County Chardonnay, 13.9 percent alcohol. Crisp, with tropical, concentrated flavors. Notes of pineapple, ripe pear and spice. Nice length.

John Christopher Fine, SUN SENTINEL, April 26, 2011

Carmine DiCandia was born in Teggiano, Italy, a small farming village outside Salerno. "I grew up on a farm with my grandparents and parents. I was the youngest of three boys. I learned how to cook. I liked to cook and play soccer."
...
The Capital Grille dinner menu is a grand affair - a large format carte with a two-page wine list. Wines are broken down by variety and region. A $30 bottle of Mark West, California Pinot Noir or Avalon's California Cabernet Sauvignon, $30, for full-bodied taste.

Mark West Pinot Noir (Coastal California) 2009
The Wine Cask Blog, review by PB, April 4, 2011

Light bright black cherry hue with fresh fruit aromas of spicy strawberry with slight cinnamon notes. Quite nice!

Palate--Juicy acid, with mouth watering presence. Light on the palate with strawberry notes and a decent finish.

This is a value "Coastal California" sourced Pinot Noir wine and Mark West does it well. Be sure to read the labels of the Mark West line of wines as they source grapes from all over the world. For $10, it tastes real and varietal so raise a glass.

February 17, 2011

Bill Grant joined the PWC team with the acquisition of Four Vines Winery this past October. An east coast transplant, Grant attended UC Berkeley and upon finishing followed his entrepreneurial spirit to build his own financial services venture. Making the case for good, cheap wine
Rob Garretson, DC BUDGET WINE EXAMINER, February 16, 2011

TJ, a loyal reader, posted a link on our Facebook page to a fascinating podcast on Freakonomics Radio entitled, “Do More Expensive Wines Taste Better?”

The show takes a fresh look at some old data that suggests that the answer to this question, for the average wine drinker, is no. Weaving together interesting anecdotes from a Harvard economist, a wine importer and Robin Goldstein – a food and wine critic infamous in the wine industry for his controversial research – the show sheds new light on the relationship between wine, critics, and consumers.

A Pinot Noir that won't Turn Your Wallet Sideways
Bill Murphy, SCOTTSDALE BUDGET WINE EXAMINER, January 17, 2011

With the Boys of Summer around the corner, the Barrett-Jackson classics rolling in, and the Waste Management Golf Tournament tents going up, Spring is in the air. Which also means that we are on our way toward Summer and our air conditioning bills will soon compete with our car payments. Before the triple digits hit, I wanted to get out and find some great red wines to drink that would not make my wallet melt.
